چکیده

One of the NASA technology development program at the Jet Propulsion Laboratory aims to increase the information return capability while reducing the size of the spacecraft via laser communications. The deep space optical transceiver developed under this program employs puke position modulation (PPM) for both uplink and downlink transmissions. An integral part of the transceiver is the development of signal acquisition and tracking subsystem. This paper describes the baseline design of the electronic assembly within the transceiver and modifications that are necessary for deep space communications. A two phase breadboard activity will be described to reduce technological risks associated with the development.

Optical characteristics and mineral chemistry of colored fluorites from the mines of Mazandaran Province, and causes of their coloration

In order to understand the cause of coloration of fluorites, following experiments (UV-spectroscopy, irradiation by gamma ray and thermal bleaching) carried out on the colored and colorless fluorites from the mines of Mazandaran Province. All colored and colorless fluorites have absorption band in UV part of electromagnetic waves but deep-violet and brown fluorites have an absorption band in vi...

Design of a Coded Modulation for Deep Space Optical Communications

We show how to design a modulation and error correcting code (ECC) to achieve near-capacity performance on a deep space optical link. We begin by comparing the capacity of various modulations, given the power and bandwidth constraints of the channel and show that pulse position modulation (PPM) is near-optimal for a nominal mission scenario to Mars. We present a coded PPM solution comprised of ...

Cost and Performance Comparison of an Earth-Orbiting Optical Communication Relay Transceiver and a Ground-Based Optical Receiver Subnet

Optical communications can provide high-data-rate telemetry from deep-space probes with subsystems that have lower mass, consume less power, and are smaller than their radio frequency (RF) counterparts. However, because optical communication is more affected by weather than is RF communication, it requires groundstation site diversity to mitigate the adverse effects of inclement weather on the ...

Low complexity serially concatenated coding for the deep space optical channel

We illustrate the performance of low-complexity serially concatenated codes designed for the deep space optical channel. The codes are an iteratively decoded, serial concatenation of a convolutional code with coded M-ary pulse-positionmodulation (PPM) through a bit interleaver. For M = 256 with a 4096-bit interleaver, we illustrate performance 1.2dB from capacity and gains of 2.8dB relative to ...

Demonstration of a Monolithic Micro-Optical Bridge for Free-Space Intrachip Interconnects

Future advances in the application of photonic interconnects will involve the insertion of parallel-channel links into Multi-Chip Modules (MCMs) [1]. These will make use of new device-level components such as arrays of Vertical Cavity Surface Emitting Lasers (VCSEL's) [2] or arrays of Micro Cavity Light-Emitting Diodes (MCLED’s) [3] and low power photoreceiver circuits [4]. One of the challenge...
